One of the Bible passages that, because of its content and significance, most impress upon the church today, is found in the book of Acts.  It is a book that narrates the history of the activity of the first church, that of the disciples who, inspired by the Spirit of God, grew and spread out to different regions of Ancient Rome.  One of the members of this first church was known as Stephen.  He served the tables of the widows, both Jewish and Gentile.  His passion for serving caused the disciples to designate him as a deacon, that is to say, in charge of the believers' needs.  Stephen was taken to share his passion for Jesus Christ before many members of the Jewish religion at that time, who could not resist the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke.  Up to here perhaps there is nothing surprising.  However, this narration begins to introduce us to the story of Paul, the Apostle Paul, the man who wrote more letters in the New Testament than any other disciple and who experienced Christ even after He had returned to His Father.

Uno de los pasajes bíblicos que más impresiona por su contenido y su significado en la Iglesia de hoy, se encuentra en el libro de los Hechos. Un Libro que narra la historia de la actividad de la iglesia primera, la de los discípulos que inspirados por el espíritu de Dios, crecían y se esparcían por diferentes regiones de la Roma Antigua. Uno de los miembros de ésta primera Iglesia que era conocido como Esteban, era servidor a las mesas de las viudas tanto judías como gentiles. Su pasión por servir hizo que los apóstoles le designaran como diácono, es decir encargado de las necesidades de los creyentes. Esteban en su pasión, fué llevado a compartir su pasión por Jesucristo delante de muchos miembros de la religión judía de la época, los cuales no se podían resistir a la sabiduría y al  Espíritu con que hablaba. Hasta aquí quizás no hay nada sorprendente. Sin embargo esta narración comienza a introducirnos a la Historia de Pablo, del apostol Pablo, del hombre que escribió mas cartas en el nuevo testamento que cualquier otro discípulo y que experimentó a Cristo aún después de haber vuelto al Padre.

Going back to the story, Stephen, in verse seven, gives one of the most forceful, systematic expositions regarding the history of God with His people.  At the same time, a new era of the church on earth was beginning, the introduction of the Gentiles, and not just the Jews, as the people of God.  It is absolutely surprising how God uses Stephen's speech to expose the zeal and rage of the Jewish people, to the point that they decided to stone him to death.  

Retomando la narración, cuando Esteban en el versículo siete, desarrolla una de las exposiciones sistemáticas más contundentes en cuanto a  la historia de Dios con su pueblo, a la vez se estaba iniciando una nueva etapa de la iglesia sobre la tierra, la introducción de los gentíles y no sólo los judíos como pueblo de Dios. Es absolutamente sorprendente como Dios usa el discurso de Esteban para exponer el celo y la rabia de un pueblo judío, al punto que deciden apedrearlo hasta su muerte. 

The person who was a present witness to this assassination was Paul, who, fulfilling his duty as a member of the Roman army, not only consented to his death but also following his death persecuted the church, entering house after house and dragging women and men to jail.  The book of Acts continues, describing that Saul's (Paul's) passion for getting rid of the new Christians was such that he went to the High Priest of the synagogue to request letters authorizing him to go to Damascus to find more Christians.  It was precisely on the way to Damascus that Saul (Paul) had an encounter with Jesus.  This encounter initiated a total change in the life of Paul when Jesus asked..."Saul, why do you persecute me?"  Saul's answer was, "Who are you Lord?"  And Jesus' response, which extends to everyone who has not repented today, was, "I am Jesus whom you persecute..."   

La persona que fué testigo presencial de éste asesinato fué Pablo, el cual cumpliendo sus labores por pertenecer ejército romano, no sólo consentía con su muerte sino que después de su muerte persiguió a la iglesia entrando casa por casa y arrastrando mujeres y hombres hasta entregarlos en la cárcel. El libro de los Hechos, continua describiéndo que era tal la pasión de Saulo (Pablo) por acabar con el pueblo de Dios, que se acercó al sumo sacerdote de la sinagoga para pedir cartas de autorización para ir a Damasco a someter a más Cristianos. Es justamente en camino a Damasco que Saulo (Pablo) tuvo un encuentro con Jesús, el cual inicia un cambio total en la vida de Pablo al preguntarle .."Saulo, Saulo, porque me persigues?", la respuesta de Saulo, fué... "Quién eres Señor?" y la respuesta de Jesus, la cual hoy se extiende a todo el que no se ha arrepentido... ""Yo soy Jesus a quién tu persigues... dura cosa te es dar coces contra el aguijón".

The story of the gospel tells us that Paul was whom God chose to take the good news to the Gentiles, and if you didn't know, you and I are Gentiles.  We are part of that people of God who, without deserving mercy, receives mercy.  A people of every nation, language and race.  Today we can confess that, like Paul, we "persecute the church" and, also like Paul, this thorn is still stuck in our heart because we have persecuted and hurt the church of Christ...today we give thanks that Jesus stops us along the way to our own destruction to say..."I am Jesus, why do you persecute me?"

La Historia del evangelio nos cuenta que Pablo fué a quién Dios escogió para llevar las buenas nuevas a los gentíles, y si tu no lo sabías tu y yo somos gentíles, somos parte de ese pueblo de Dios que sin merecer misericordia, recibimos misericordia. Pueblo de toda nación, lengua, o raza. Hoy podemos confesar que como Pablo, "perseguimos la iglesia" y como Pablo, éste aguijón continua clavado en nuestro corazón, por haber perseguido y hacer daño a la iglesia de Cristo..., hoy damos gracias que Jesús nos detiene en nuestro camino  a nuestra propia destrucción para preguntarnos.. Soy Jesús... porqué me persigues?

The only way to arrive at true repentance is through a true encounter with Jesus Christ.  He is always ready to knock on your door, and the result of opening that door and sitting down to dine with Jesus implies, first of all, the confession of being persecutors of the church of Christ.  It isn't simply repentance of our sinful condition, but repentance of the desire in this fallen condition to cause harm to Jesus and the church of Christ.  We are enemies of God, as Paul says in the book of Romans.  Peter, after Jesus performed the miracle of the fish, didn't say to him:  "Please, Rabbi, return tomorrow to continue filling the baskets with fish so we can sell more!"  No, his answer was, "Away from me Lord, for I am a sinner!"

La única manera de llegar al verdadero arrepentimiento, es un encuentro real con Jesucristo, el cual esta siempre presto a tocar a tu puerta y la consecuencia de abrir esa puerta y de sentarte a cenar con Jesús implica primero la confesión de ser perseguidores de la iglesia de Cristo. No es solamente el arrepentimiento de nuestra condición de pecador, sino el deseo en esta condición caída de hacerle daño a Jesús y  su iglesia de Cristo. Somos enemigos de Dios, dice Pablo en el libro de Romanos. Pedro, después que Jesús hizo el milagro de los peces, no le respondió, por favor Rabí, regresa mañana para seguir llenando cestas de peces y así la venta será mejor... su respuesta fué...Aléjate de mi Señor, pues soy un pecador!

This radical understanding of our condition will lead us to a new condition, one of total repentance and total understanding of the love of Christ, who loves his enemies.  The same passion we have inside of us to persecute Jesus, he then converts into a passion to preach the kingdom of God and His justice to all the nations.  Just as it happened to Paul, God desires to expose our religion, our patriotism, our customs, our nationality.  Paul expressed, "I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.  For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, those of my own race, the people of Israel.  Theirs is the adoption as sons; theirs the diving glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises.  Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God over all..."  Romans 9:2-5  Is our patriotism greater, are our traditions and customs, is our religion greater than God's desire for you?  It's a good question.   

Esta comprensión radical de nuestra condición, nos llevará a  una condición total de arrepentimiento y de comprensión total del amor de Cristo que ama a su enemigo y que usando la misma pasión que vive en nosotros para perseguirle, Jesus la convierte en una pasión para predicar el reino de Dios y su justicia a todas las naciones. Tal como le ocurrió a Pablo, Dios desea exponer nuestra religión, nuestro patriotismo, nuestras costumbres, nuestra nacionalidad. Pablo expresó, "Que tengo gran tristeza y continuo dolor en mi corazón. porque desearía yo mismos ser anatema, separado de Cristo, por amor a mis hermanos, los que son parientes según la carne, que son Israelítas, de los cuales son la adopción,la gloria, el pacto, la promulgación de la ley, el culto , las promesas; de quienes son los patriarcas y de los cuales según la carne vino Cristo, el cual es Dios." Rom. 9:2-5. Es nuestro patriotismo mayor, es nuestra tradición y costumbre, es nuestra religión, mayor que el deseo de Dios por tí?. Una buena pregunta.

Many Christians viewed Paul with unbelief because before his experience with Christ, he persecuted them.  However, now in Christ, Paul became the Apostle to the Gentiles.  Jesus Christ made Paul into a man who became Greek to the Greek, Roman to the Roman, Eunich to the Eunich.  Christ gave the identity of the kingdom to every man and woman from every tongue and nation so that we seek the nationality of the Kingdom of God in the work of Christ.  Perhaps you identify with this story, maybe you are running the race away from God.  Whatever your situation may be, if you believe you want to find Jesus, remember that He is looking for you first, on your way to Damascus.  

Muchos cristianos le veían a Pablo con incredulidad pues era antes de su experiencia con Cristo, perseguidor de ellos, pero ahora en Cristo, Pablo se convirtió en el Apostol para los gentíles. Jesucristo hizo de Pablo el hombre que se hizo griego para el grego, romano para el romano, eunuco para el eunuco, nos dió la identidad del Reino a todo hombre de toda nación y lengua para que busquemos la nacionalidad del Reino de Dios en la obra de Cristo .Quizás te identificas con lo narrado, quizás estas corriendo la carrera en contra de Dios, como sea, si crees que quieres encontrar a Jesús, recuerda el te está buscando a tí primero, en tu camino a Damasco.
