"...A anunciar libertad a los cautivos" Jesús de Nazaret"

These days in Colombia, in the midst of many announcements, rumors and bits of news that have yet to be confirmed, the eyes of the world have remained fixed upon the expectation of freedom for two women who have been kidnapped for several years and for a little boy named Emmanuel. 

Por estos días, en Colombia, en medio de muchos anuncios, rumores y noticias sin confirmar, los ojos del mundo se han mantenido fijos en las expectativas de liberación de dos mujeres secuestradas por varios años y de un niño de nombre Emmanuel.

Moreover, at the time of writing this article, we are gladly hearing that finally, two  women of political renown were liberated and that they will finally be reunited with their families and, after a prudent period of time, with Emmanuel, the son of one of the women, who had been staying for the last two years in a place where children are cared for under the vigilance of a specialized entity of the government, without knowing for certain if he was indeed the son of one of the women freed today.  However, in recent weeks, and based upon scientific exams, the compatibility of mitochondrial DNA has been proven and therefore it is highly likely that he is the Emmanuel they were hoping for, and he will surely be reunited with his liberated mother and with the rest of his family.

Es más, al momento de escribír éste artículo escuchamos con agrado que finalmente dos mujeres de amplio reconocimiento político fueron liberadas y que serán reunidas finalmente con sus familiares, y en un período de tiempo prudencial con Emmanuel hijo de una de ellas, quién habría permanecido, en los últimos dos años, en un lugar para cuidado de los niños bajo la vigilancia de la entidad especializada del gobierno, sin que se conociera a ciencia cierta si era el hijo o nó de una de las mujeres liberadas hoy, pero que en las últimas semanas, y basado en exámenes científicos se ha comprobado la compatibilidad de los rasgos del adn mitocondrial y por tanto un alto porcentaje de que es el Emamnuel esperado y por seguro será reunido con su madre liberada y con el resto de su familia.

The more we reflect upon the situation in Colombia, where many have been kidnapped and few have been freed, the more real the images of the people of God become, especially in the last years before the birth of Christ, and of course the first thirty years after his birth.  It was without a doubt a time of historical tension, since the Roman empire was going through times of instability and breaking apart, facing many difficulties as far as maintaining the empire united and with Caesar as the absolute authority. 

Entre más reflexionamos sobre la situación de Colombia, donde muchos han sido secuestrados y pocos los liberados, más reales se hacen las imágenes del pueblo de Dios en los últimos años antes del nacimiento de Cristo, y por supuesto los primeros treinta después de su nacimiento. Era sin lugar a duda un momento de tensión histórica, pues el imperio de Roma vivía épocas  de inestabilidad y de fraccionamiento. Con muchísimas dificultades para mantener el imperio y el Cesar como autoridad absoluta y como imperio unido.

What's more, the Jewish people where expecting the fullfillment of the time of God, in which there was the promise of a savior, a liberator for His people, and the establishment of a new kingdom, the Kingdom of God and His justice.  His name would be Emmanuel.  Chapter nine of the book of Isaiah describes the news and fulfillment of this promise..."because to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders." 

Aún más,  el pueblo judío estaba con la expectativa del cumplimiento del tiempo de Dios, donde había prometido un Salvador, un  libertador , para su pueblo y el establecimiento de un nuevo reino, el Reino de Dios y su justicia. Su nombre, Emmanuel. El libro de Isaías, describe en el capítulo nueve, el anuncio y el cumplimiento de ésta promesa ..."porque un niño nos es nacido, hijo no es dado y el principado sobre su hombro" . 

This situation produced political, social and economic tensions that were difficult to control from a human point of view.  It was absolutely impossible for the Roman empire, as strong as it was, to avoid the wave of expectations of liberation and establishment that came along with the promise of a God who is sovereign over any kingdom established by man.

Esta situación, producía unas tensiones, políticas, sociales y económicas difícilmente controlables desde  el punto de vista humano. Era absolutamente imposible para un imperio romano, por más poderoso que fuese, el evitar esta ola de expectativas de liberación y establecimiento que conlleva la promesa de un Dios que es soberano sobre cualquier reino establecido por el hombre.

The persecution of the Jewish people by the Romans, who submitted them to torture, or withheld their rights as citizens, and/or made them a class apart, separated by their traditions and religion, all of these things fed their hope for  Emmanuel, especially for those who never gave in to the system, who never negotiated the God of promises.

La persecución vivida por el pueblo judío, por parte del pueblo romano, el cual los sometió a torturas, o a carencia de derechos como ciudadanos , y/o a ser una clase separada por sus tradiciones y su religión, alimento más y más la esperanza de un Emmanuel, sobre todo para aquellos que nunca se entregaron al sistema, que nunca  negociaron al Dios de promesas.

Many of the sects of the time (Pharisees, Saducees, etc.) had negotiated with the system in power, with the mode of operation and of maintaining their traditions above the message of salvation.  Because of that, we can see, if we follow the context of the Scriptures, how God chose Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth, John the Baptist, fishermen, tax collectors, doctors, low-profile people, in order to reveal and establish His kingdom among them, silently, a kindgom that expands like the wind when it blows across the fields. 

Muchas de las sectas (fariseos, sadúceos, helenos, etc) de la época habían negociado con el sistema de turno, la manera de operar y de mantener sus tradiciones por encima de el mensaje de salvación. Por todo ello podemos ver si seguimos el contexto de las escrituras, como Dios escoge a María, José, Elizabeth, Juan el bautista, pescadores, recaudadores de impuestos, médicos, gente de bajo perfil, para entre ellos revelar y establecer un reino silencioso, callado, que se expande como el viento cuando recorre los pastos.

The birth of Emmanuel (God with us), Jesus of Nazareth, the fulfillment of God sending His son to walk among us and proclaim the message of salvation, brought as a consequence the fact that we would be exposed to what we really are:  for Pontius Pilate to recognize that he didn't know, "What is the truth?" and for Nicodemus to recognize that he had to be born again, and for Peter to realize that he was a sinner, and for a prostitute to have the possibility of not sinning anymore.  

El nacimiento de un Emmanuel (Dios con nosotros) el Jesus de Nazaret, el cumplimiento de Dios de enviar a su hijo para que caminara entre nosotros y anunciara el mensaje de salvación, trajo como consecuencia el que fuésemos expuestos a lo que realmente somos. A Poncio Pilatos a reconocer que no sabía ?Cual era la verdad? o un Nicodemo a reconocer que tenía que nacer de nuevo, o a un Pedro a reconocer que era pecador, o a una prostituta a tener la posibilidad de no pecar más.

The excellent news of a savior and a kingdom that would be distinct, holy, annointed, full of justice and forgiveness and mercy for those who confess and believe, put all of us in the same condition of necessity and exposed every motivation of pride, power, control and vanity.

Las excelentes noticias de un salvador y un reino, distinto, santo, ungido, lleno de justicia, de perdón y de misericordia para quienes confiesan y creen, nos puso a todos en las misma condición de necesidad y expuso toda motivación de orgullo, poder, control y vanidad.

Today in Colombia the news of Emmanuel, the little boy born in captivity, ought to give us a better understanding that Emmanuel, the son of God, the Christ, became man not to free the captive, but rather to "give freedom to the captive."  Man can only free what he has enslaved with his own yoke, but only the son of God can give "Freedom" to the captive, the freedom of living not according to the world but according to God, who loves he who repents, confesses, takes up his cross and walks.

Hoy en Colombia, las noticias de un Emmanuel, el niño que nació bajo secuestro, nos deberían llevar a entender mejor que el Emmanuel de Dios, su hijo, El Cristo, se hizo hombre no para liberar al cautivo sino para "darle libertad a los cautivos". El hombre solo puede liberar, lo que exclavizó con su propio yugo, pero sólo  el hijo de Dios puede dar "Libertad" al cautivo, la libertad de no vivir conforme al mundo, sino conforme al Dios que ama al que se arrepiente, confiesa, toma su Cruz y anda.

Today Colombia needs Freedom in Christ so it can be a country that is truly free.

Hoy Colombia necesita la Libertad en Cristo, para ser un país verdaderamente libre.
